Celebrate Advent and Christmas Seasons at the Shrine of Jesus

Last year's First Anticipated Simbang Gabi Mass, December 15, 2014.
Last year’s First Anticipated Simbang Gabi Mass, December 15, 2014. From my personal archives.

Christmas is just around the corner, and what better way to prepare for it is by active participation in the Holy Masses leading to this special day.

At the Shrine of Jesus, we make sure we prepare well for this special occasion. We began with the blessing and lighting of the Advent Wreath and the blessing of the church’s Christmas decors last November 28.

And as Shrine volunteers, we took part in an Advent Recollection, Mass, and Holy Hour last Saturday, December 12, at the Betania Retreat Center in cool Tagaytay City. Our Recollection Master was Fr. Herbert Camacho, the Parochial Vicar of the St. John the Baptist Parish in San Juan City.

The Shrine of Jesus works on a theme for its celebrations. In line with the Pope’s declaration of the Year of Mercy, this year’s Advent and Christmas activities are done under the theme: Awa at Pagpapatawad na Lubos, Handog ng Isinilang na Manunubos.

We also have an ongoing Christmas love offering project: Parol na Makinang, Tulong sa Simbahan. I would like to invite you to support this project for the maintenance and upkeep of our Shrine which has been standing for 16 years already. Through your love offering of P1,000 (you can do it individually or as a family or group), you will light up one Parol decoration inside the church, and proceeds will go for maintenance of the Shrine. Visit our Shrine Office for details. Let us also show mercy and compassion to God’s temple–the church–and contribute to its much needed repairs.

This year's Christmas Project of the Shrine of Jesus. Please do support and help us maintain our church.

Our Christmas Eve Concelebrated Mass happens on December 24, 7:30 PM. We usually hold this early so that people could still go home in time for Noche Buena. Do attend this Mass because we have a very special Panunuluyan presentation, and exchange gift among the churchgoers, just like we do every year. My family will be a part of the Panunuluyan (yup there’s a big hint already for you, so do not miss this Mass!).

On Christmas Day, two special Masses will be held in the morning–the 9:00 AM Children’s Mass, followed by picture taking with Santa Claus, and the 10:30 AM Concelebrated Mass, with no less than His Eminence, Luis Antonio G. Cardinal Tagle, D.D., Archbishop of Manila, as the Main Celebrant and Homilist.

Christmas Season continues with the New Year’s Eve Mass on December 31, 7:30 PM and the New Year’s Day Concelebrated Mass, with His Eminence, Gaudencio B. Cardinal Rosales, D.D. Archbishop-Emeritus of Archdiocese of Manila, as the Main Celebrant and Homilist.

You read it right! Two Cardinals celebrating two important Eucharistic Celebrations at the Shrine of Jesus, in just one week apart. Hope you could attend both to receive the blessings of two Cardinals.
See you at the Shrine of Jesus!

Active Fun Spooktacular Halloween Party

It’s that time of the year when my daughter plays dress up. No, we’re not into the scary/spooky type, but Halloween for us is more of a costume party, that’s meant to be fun.

And that’s what we exactly did about two weeks ago. We kicked off the Halloween week with Active Fun’s Spooktacular Halloween Party. Huge thanks go to Active Fun for extending this invitation to Mommy Bloggers Philippines.

My daughter had only one character in mind: Joy of Inside Out. She already had that in mind ever since watching the movie last July.

My joyful Joy! Thank you, blue washi tapes and yellow ball pit ball!
My joyful Joy! Thank you, blue washi tapes and yellow ball pit ball!

She wore the same costume (but a different dress this time) for three more parties the following week (doing another post for those parties).

We were there really early! We didn’t want to catch the Friday weekend traffic which starts early afternoon.

First two people we met: Sadness and the pirate-host. Sadness won a prize for being best in costume!

Sadness won a prize for being best in costume! Her mom told me that they’ve been joining for a couple of years already, but this is the first time that they’ve actually won a costume prize, so they were really happy. And they should be, there were a lot of prizes in store for the winners!

I liked how Active Fun grouped the costume categories, understanding that not all kids and parents might be up to something spooky. We were at the cute costume category. There was also a category for little princes and princesses, for spooky costumes, and for families dressing up in sync.

First up was the Trick or Treatin’ within the building. Some building tenants gave away candies and treats for the kids.

And that included Mathemagis. Was I a psychic? I knew Teacher Cherry would be downstairs to give away treats! Teacher Cherry is Aria’s most favourite Mathemagis teacher. She loves her teacher so much, we even thought of transferring to Mathemagis BGC because Teacher Cherry was reassigned there early this year.

Reunited. Happy surprise!

There was also a parade of costumes for the judges to see them, food and drinks, lots of giveaways, a magic show,

And Active Fun characters!

Thanks for that rockin' dancer who carried Aria!

Sesame Street won them the first prize. They also had other members in their group dressed up as Big Bird, Oscar the Grouch, and Cookie Monster.

Thank you, Active Fun, for this really fun treat!

Stay tuned in the blog for the rest of the Halloweek events we attended. It was a busy one for the family! Hope you had a meaningful Hallowtide with your loved ones.

Plan W Sing Philippines Choral Leadership Program for Women Conductors

Singing is second nature to Filipinos. Everywhere you go–whether at churches, schools, companies, or barangays, people can easily join in singing and carry a tune, which eventually turns into a beautiful harmony when done together.

A few decades ago, a woman had a vision of a Singing Philippines. What better way to promote unity and harmony than with music? And so, with this vision in mind, and through her leadership, numerous choral groups were born, mentored, nurtured, and making names for their own. And from these choirs, conductors were also born.

A great opportunity is presented to women conductors in collaboration with a multinational company, Diageo Philippines. As part of their community investment program, called Plan W, they have partnered with the Andrea O. Veneracion Singing Philippines Initiative to carry out the Plan W Sing Philippines Choral Leadership Program, which seeks to give intensive training to 35 Filipino women choral conductors.

The program highlights high-level training from the best choral conductors and music teachers in the country. The Program Director is Mark Anthony Carpio, choirmaster of the Philippine Madrigal Singers. Application is free, and the program includes free training, plus board and lodging for accepted provincial participants.

Manila Workshops: Philippine Homeschool Conference 2015

UPDATE: JOIN the Raffle to get ONE All-Access Pass from Manila Workshops! Read below.

Philippine Homeschool Conference 2015.

I still can’t believe we’re homeschooling already! My daughter is now in Kinder 2 under a provider, and despite all the doubts, groping, busy schedules, and the drama of everyday life, we are doing fine. Nothing’s more rewarding than seeing your child enjoy what she’s doing–as to her own words, enjoy playing while learning.

Last year, I attended a Homeschool Conference organized by Manila Workshops and The Learning Basket. It was a sea of familiar faces yet an unfamiliar field–homeschooling. This year’s another opportunity for the curious bees to learn about homeschooling, the whats and hows would it benefit your families.

Happening on October 17 at the Samsung Hall and SMX Convention Center in SM Aura, this whole day event features two special guest speakers from the US. The event is organized by the Homeschoolers Association of the Philippines, The LEarning Basket, and Manila Workshops.

Sign up here, and enter the Referral Code TKEAHOMESCHCONF2 when prompted.

Happy homeschooling!

Express Yourself: an afternoon of fun, games, and learning for moms and kids

Last Saturday, August 15th, we were a few of the lucky ones to witness the preview of Disney Pixar’s much anticipated movie, “Inside Out.”

But before watching the film, moms and kids were treated to an afternoon of learning and bonding through the Express Yourself Parenting Workshop, organized by SM Cinema and its official food unit, Snack Time, and the country’s top parenting magazine and website, Smart Parenting.

My little cute girl. Such a charmer!

Moms got to try some pampering, too! I tried out hand paraffin and back massage from Bioessences, one of the sponsors of the event.

After which, at five in the afternoon, we went up a floor to the cinemas for the exclusive preview of Inside Out.

The movie is already showing since August 19, and I’d really recommend it for parents and kids alike. This is a good movie to teach emotions to children. And it will make us proud that a Filipino co-directed the movie. Indeed we are making waves in the arts!

So, come visit your nearest SM Cinema to watch Inside Out!

Once again, a huge thanks to Smart Parenting for the invitation, and SM Cinema and Snack Time for organizing this event! The pre-movie activities prepped us all for the movie, as we have created wonderful memories with our children. Another ball of Joy in their memory bank, or perhaps in their Core Memory! Ok, better watch before I spoil too much!
